When2.0 Conference
2005년 12월 6일 When2.0 Conference가 성황리에 열렸다.
이 Conference에서는 휴대폰, gps기기, local search들로 인해 location이 주목받고 있지만 이전부터 컴퓨터에 내장되어있던 시간이 무시되고 있다는 데서 문제제기를 한다. When2.0에서는 컴퓨터의 시간 만이 아니라 우리가 느끼는 시간과 컴퓨터의 시간이 어떻게 잘 관계를 맺을 수 있을 지에 대해서 고민한다.
시간은 이미 많은 software에서 쓰인다. 그중 제일 많이 쓰이는 건 calendar, scheduling, event, resoure allocation이다. 그러나 그 외에도 사람관계, 주의 집중 등의 삶에 관련된 시간은 아직 computer가 잘 고려하지 못하고 있다.
동적인 실제세계에서 시간을 잘 쓰게 하는 것은 중요하나 이에 관련된 application들은 많이 없다. software tool이나 service들은 우리의 실제 삶을 잘 고려해주지 못하고 있다. 실제로 시간을 잘 다룰 수 있으면 사진을 tagging한다던가 꼭 필요한 시간에 information service를 제공해주거나 할 수 있다.
인터넷에서는 십대들도 팀을 만들어 아무 자본, resource없이 돈을 벌 수 있지만 팀을 조직하는 하고 관리하기는 어렵다. 따라서 이런 팀을 관리할 수 있는 tool들도 필요하다. 예전 computer게임에서는 물리법칙들이 사용되었지만 MMORPG에서는 사회적인 관리 기술이 필요하듯이 말이다.
시간은 발견하기 어려운 자원이다. 그러나 잊기 쉬운 차원인 시간을 managing, understanding, leveraging을 해주는 툴은 아직 원시적이다. 여러분의 소중한 시간을 써달라. 우리는 시간을 다룰 수 있길 바란다. Better timing을 통해 great opportunity를 찾아라.
When2.0 Conference에서 던지는 질문
- Things improve over time - even calendar and scheduling tools. How are calendar developers handling time, calendar-sharing, disclosure of individuals' busy-ness and specific activities? How can we improve multi-person scheduling?
- How do users plan their public activities? How can events be traded, shared and enriched? How can such platforms add value with community - ratings, photos, presence information and the like?
- Many applications don't explicitly manage people's time, but time is an underlying factor in making the application more robust or useful, or in allocating resources ranging from consumers' attention to temporary office space.
- How can applications use time under the covers to improve their functionality? How do prices change over a buying cycle? Where can yield management apply beyond hotels and airlines?
- Finally, how can time patterns help us detect and predict both opportunities and threats, ranging from potential sales of expensive merchandise on the one hand, to security and health threats on the other? What can you figure out about a user's intentions by watching surfing behavior? How do viruses behave as they interact not just with hosts (machines or humans) but with one another?

Esther Dyson은 Microsoft CTO Ray Ozzie, Yahoo의 Chief Architect of Search and Marketplace인 Raymie Stata, Open Source Applications Foundation President인 Mitchell Kapor와 사람들이 시간을 관리하는 걸 도와주는 software를 개발하는 것에 대해 얘기했다.
Esther Dyson은 EVDB CEO인 Brian Dear, Upcoming.org의 창업자 Andy Baio, Meetup.com CEO인 Scott Heiferman과 community events online을 발견하고 공유하는 것에 대해서 이야기했다.
Electronic Art의 chief designer인 Will Wright (SimCity 시리즈의 제작자이다.)는 game play에 있어 시간의 역할에 대해서 이야기 했다.
